Big Day of Giving Provides Big Opportunities for Our Parks

April 21st, 2025

Each year, Big Day of Giving (BDOG) unites the Sacramento region for a full day of generosity and this year, Midtown Parks is thrilled to be a part of it once again on May 1.

Midtown Parks, the 501(c)(3) arm of Midtown Association, aims to increase health and community engagement by investing in Midtown’s parks and public spaces. The organization supports and activates Fremont Park, Marshall Park, Muir Park, Sutter’s Fort, Truitt Bark Park, and Winn Park, bringing meaningful programming and improvements to the heart of Sacramento.

From activating green spaces to creating opportunities for connection through community programming, every donation to Midtown Parks directly supports more vibrant and inclusive green spaces for all.

Why Give to Midtown Parks?

Midtown Parks is more than just green space. It’s a community-powered initiative that brings people together through a shared vision of well-being, creativity, and fun. Your support helps us:

  • Host over 40 free fitness classes each year
  • Bring art, live music, and cultural experiences to neighborhood parks
  • Maintain lighting and capital improvements in our parks
  • Maintain safe, welcoming green spaces for families, kids, and pets
  • Support local instructors and performers through paid partnerships

I love being an instructor for Fresh Air: Midtown Parks. It has been beautiful to connect with the community and neighbors through wellness in nature. Midtown Parks offers these classes for free, providing accessibility to anyone seeking a healthier lifestyle or seeking connection in the Midtown community. – Kirsten Johnson, President, Yoga Moves Us

How Your Contributions Have Supported Our Parks

Over the years, generous donations through Big Day of Giving have directly supported signature Midtown Parks events that foster connection, creativity, and joy in our neighborhood parks. Thanks to community support, we’ve been able to bring the following projects to life:

These enhancements and programs wouldn’t be possible without your generous support. Your donation ensures we can continue building a Midtown that’s inclusive, activated, and accessible for all.

To be able to see artwork that my team and I helped to create on a basketball court I used to play on feels surreal. The designs pay homage to the past, present and future of Chicano art and culture and incorporate local landmarks. I am very appreciative of the opportunity from Midtown Association in trusting my team’s vision and supporting art that celebrates the culture of the surrounding neighborhood. – Manuel Fernando Rios, Mural Artist, Muir Park Murals

Looking to Give More? Support These Local Nonprofits on BDOG

Midtown is proud to be home to many inspiring nonprofits doing important work across our region. If you’re feeling extra generous this Big Day of Giving, consider supporting:

Friends of Sutter’s Fort is the nonprofit cooperating association for Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park. The organization collaborates with California State Parks to connect community members to the health, recreational, and educational benefits of the park grounds, museum exhibits, educational programs, and events at Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park. With the support of donors, Friends of Sutter’s Fort continues its longstanding commitment to funding projects that preserve and restore artifacts and historic structures.

Sacramento LGBT Community Center, founded in 1978, has grown from a volunteer-led effort into one of Northern California’s largest LGBTQ+ nonprofits. The Center provides vital programs and services that promote health, wellness, economic justice, and a sense of belonging for the LGBTQ+ community. With a Platinum Seal of Transparency from GuideStar, the organization remains a trusted and impactful resource in the region.

Capital Stage Theatre Company is a professional nonprofit theatre company in Sacramento known for producing thought-provoking and transformative performances. Since its founding in 2005, Capital Stage has presented seven mainstage productions annually at its Midtown venue, along with concerts, special events, and educational programs. Recognized as one of the region’s most respected arts organizations, Capital Stage also offers internships, apprenticeships, and community partnerships that support arts education and professional development.

WEAVE Inc., incorporated in 1978, is Sacramento’s primary provider of crisis intervention services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, sex trafficking, and stalking. The organization offers survivor-centered, trauma-informed support, including a 24/7 helpline, emergency and long-term housing, legal assistance, and counseling. WEAVE is committed to culturally responsive care and actively integrates Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) into all programs. Through partnerships and education initiatives, WEAVE works to prevent violence and build a safer, more informed community.

Lavender Library, Archives, and Cultural Exchange (LLACE), established in Sacramento in 1998, is a lending library and archive dedicated to LGBTQI literature, media, and history. Open to the public, it serves as a cultural hub, offering a safe, inclusive space for browsing and community events. As a sober and low-cost alternative for connection, LLACE continues to uplift queer voices, preserve collective histories, and proudly house banned books, all while standing firm against rising anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and legislation.

RedRover has been working since 1987 to bring animals out of crisis and strengthen the bond between people and animals. Through programs like RedRover Relief, which offers financial aid for veterinary care and domestic violence escapes; RedRover Responders, which deploys volunteers during disasters and supports community-based animal care; and RedRover Readers, which teaches empathy through stories in classrooms, RedRover creates a compassionate network dedicated to helping animals and the people who love them.
