As we approach July’s Second Saturday, we are thrilled to feature an exclusive interview with the remarkable local artist, Keia Kodama. Known for her dynamic multidisciplinary approach, Keia is not just sculpting art but also reshaping the narrative around street culture, style, and design. In this interview, Keia shares insights into her artistic journey, her connection with Sacramento, and the powerful stories behind her creations.
A: My background is in visual production and fashion, with a strong focus on street style and sneaker culture. This passion naturally evolved into creating art, as I found inspiration in the vibrant and expressive elements of these worlds. They offered a unique lens through which I could tell stories and explore culture.
A: I first got involved with Second Saturday when I was invited to create a small installation and contribute a piece for an auction event. This opportunity means a lot to me because having support from an organization like Midtown Association makes me feel seen and appreciated as a local artist.
A: I am dynamic multidisciplinary artist, specializing in sculpture and immersive installations. My work contributes to a more diverse and inclusive artistic landscape through powerful storytelling. I hope that I am creating a compelling body of work exploring the intersections of street culture, style, and design, transforming negative connotations into art that celebrates Black culture. Because my love for sneakers it allowed me to be in a lane that is seldom used and be seen as not just street art but the potential of fine art as well.
A: Living and working in Sacramento has inspired me to create the art I wanted to see, both for myself and for the city. It has driven me to fill the gaps and bring new perspectives to the local artistic landscape.
A: My main aspiration as an artist is to keep creating in any capacity. With each project, I aim to craft something sentimental, nostalgic, and cool—art that people can experience and that sparks meaningful conversations and education.
A: Second Saturday brings together a diverse and vibrant community eager to experience culture. Participating in this event provides visibility to people who might not otherwise encounter my work, allowing me to connect with a broader audience in a unique and meaningful way.
From her beginnings in visual production and fashion to her unique contributions to Second Saturday, Keia’s passion for art and dedication to representing diverse perspectives shine through. Her journey and insights remind us of the importance of supporting local artists and celebrating the rich tapestry of creativity within our city.
