This month, the Kennedy Gallery features the works of Michael Misha Kennedy, the master of acrylics. Kennedy explores conversations in color and form through his eye-catching abstracts. He combines the stylistic accomplishment of Impressionism with modern subject matter and technique. His background in design and "master of acrylics" title are evident in his bright, eye-catching canvases, where geometric patterns and additional textures make these paintings into decorative objects. Kennedy says he rotates the canvasses as he works on abstract paintings giving the works a sense of movement and life. He seeks a conflict or tension between hues, patterns, theories and textures; he says it mimics what we see in nature. Combining many layers of glaze work along with the resin helps to draw the light through the layers of his work producing depth of color and hues through the tissue paper layers. [less-]

In 1648 India, two Imperial Guards watch from their post as the sun rises for the first time on the newly completed Taj Mahal -- an event that shakes their respective worlds. Sara Friedlander has created a series of three-dimensional mixed media visual narratives to honor courageous women, who left their homeland and their families, often under great duress, and traveled to America to start a new life. Most of them spoke no English; holding steadfast to their hopes for a brighter future, they faced daunting challenges in order to establish themselves in this new world. She has collected vintage portraits as well as images in the public domain (taken either in photographic studios or on the street during the first quarter of the 1900's) and then, using Photoshop, digitally combined them with her own photographs (landscapes, birds, trees, architecture) and tied them together with paint. Sara explains, “I began with photographs of my maternal grandmother, Masha Bornstein, who in 1908 at the age of 15 left her family behind in Petrikov, Belarus and traveled alone in steerage to Boston. She soon made her way to Providence, Rhode Island to begin anew. She was an accomplished seamstress who designed and made all the clothes in the photographs you see of her. Warmth and integrity emanate from her face. I’m told that she worked in and then ran a small sewing shop. After marrying, she and my grandfather sent for her mother and three siblings to join them. She died before I was two and by creating this piece, I feel more connected to her life and my own history.” Each of Sara Friedlander’s mixed media panels highlights the journey of an im/Migrant woman. “By utilizing visual storytelling to represent a universal tale, I created a narrative based on what I gleaned from the photo and what I saw in the eyes of each of these women. The result is analogous to creative nonfiction—neither pure fact nor pure fiction.” “It has been a delightful journey for me so far. I invite you to let your imagination wander into each portrait as well.” Sara hopes to expand this project by depicting many more nationalities.” At this critical time, when immigration is seen as a national and global threat throughout the world, these portraits can help us remember and reflect deeply on the reality that most Americans, most of us, are relatively recent descendants of immigrants ourselves.” [less-]

Kendall Isotalo’s body of work Quietude examines the emotional space that can occur during a time when a perceived threat of loss and transition coexists with feelings of gratitude and hope. She has found that in her attempts to be fully present and aware, she is able to experience profound moments of stillness, quiet, and tranquility. Isotalo’s photography is about capturing the balance and difference between moments that she perceives as tranquil and mysterious, versus those she finds more melancholy or uncertain. “I’ve always been aware of how these two very different ways of perceiving and responding can trigger emotions on a multidimensional level,” she says. “I’m also interested in negative space in the sense of what is invisible or unknown and how that can create imaginary or altered realities. I combine old family photos, as well as other photos that I may find at thrift stores, with new images, placing myself in most of them. I use old images not as a way of staying stuck in the past, but rather as a way of honoring, understanding and preserving it. In many ways, I feel that I’m breathing new life into old photographs, keeping the past alive. The process of my photography has always been extremely cathartic for me. When I work on photos, thoughts flow freely and I’m in an almost meditative state of mind.” Kendall Isotalo grew up in a family where her father was always taking photographs, especially of herself, her mother, and her siblings. “Since I was frequently being photographed, I think it sent a subconscious message that photography was something of great significance and importance. By my early twenties, I realized that I had amassed a large amount of shoeboxes full of photos, at least compared to other people my age. I was already taking the time to look through all of them too, and I felt the beauty of the power they possessed. They had an ability to evoke emotions within me and temporarily transport me to another place and time.” As a young teen, Kendall Isolato was highly introspective. “I wrote many poems with the idea of creating songs, but I didn’t play any instruments. At the same time, I also started taking photographs of friends and family with a little Instamatic camera my parents had given me. And so when I was a student in the 90’s at SFSU, it seemed a natural choice for me, after just one semester, to switch from studying psychology to my passion—photography.” [less-]

Jan Manzi enjoys photographing a range of man-made and natural subjects — often abstracting or isolating them in a way to bring attention to things that might not ordinarily be noticed. As she says, “I find myself responding to the wonderful play of light and shadow that can transform the appearance of a building, a forgotten object, a plant, or a rock.” Sometimes the results are a bit quirky, which can cause viewers to say “what is that?”… followed by surprise at how there can be a quiet beauty in so much that surrounds them if they only take a little time to look and see. Jan Manzi first became interested in photography in college when she was able to learn the basics of working in a traditional darkroom and photographing a wide range of subjects. She began large format work after attending her first photography workshop, the Owens Valley Photography Workshop with Ray MacSavaney, John Sexton and Bruce Barnbaum as instructors. Inspired by the work of the instructors and Brett Weston, who welcomed participants to his home, Jan began to see things differently. Using a view camera helped her slow down and to pay more attention to how light can change textures and shapes. Most of Manzi’s work is with a 4x5 view camera and some with a 6x7 medium format camera. When she didn’t have access to a darkroom for a time, she used 5x7 and 8x10 cameras so she could contact-print the negatives. She has been fortunate to attend workshops over the years and to learn from many photographers, including Randy Efros, Mark Citret, and Gene Kennedy. Manzi has spent most of her life in Southern California, becoming a Northern Californian just over eleven years ago when work brought her to Davis. This move also brought her greater access to Viewpoint’s excellent field trips and workshops. She continues to use film and print gelatin-silver photographs in her home darkroom. [less-]

This comprehensive watercolor workshop will show you how to take the guesswork out of color mixing and gain color confidence! Learn how to organize your palette in order to mix the color you want. Over the course of the workshop, you will create a variety of color swatch pages to help you recognize specific color characteristics and color relationships. Demo's will be given throughout the day on how to create proper mid tones, mutes, and tints. Basic color theory will be discussed as well as instruction on how to really "see" color. The role of black (and how to mix your own black) will also be covered. A basic understanding of color is the beginning of creating rich, mature and cohesive works of art. More importantly, confidence in mixing color brings enjoyment and ease to the entire painting experience. About the instructor: Jaya King is a California native based out of Sacramento who has been showing, teaching, and demonstrating her work throughout the San Francisco Bay Area since 2003. Jaya has a passion for color and finds excitement exploring the nuances of color relationships while painting. Note: There will be a one-hour meal break mid-workshop. Materials not included. [less-]

In 1648 India, two Imperial Guards watch from their post as the sun rises for the first time on the newly completed Taj Mahal -- an event that shakes their respective worlds. When they are ordered to perform an unthinkable task, the aftermath forces them to question the concepts of friendship, beauty, and duty and how it changes them forever. Guards at the Taj will be directed by Capital Stage Co-Founder and Associate Artist Jonathan Williams (Blackberry Winter, Uncanny Valley, The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity, Dying City, Master Class, Hunter Gatherers, Dirty Story, Boy Gets Girl, The Shape of Things) and will feature Rajesh Bose (Capital Stage debut), and Mohammad Shehata (Capital Stage debut).

[less-]
