Tyrone Wells is a folk pop singer-songwriter based in the Pacific Northwest whose accessible sound has been widely used by TV shows and loved by fans. Comparing him to Jason Mraz would not be incorrect so much as it would be lazy. While Wells does have the bright, simple sound of acoustic radio pop, there's soul that lies underneath the surface that occasionally shines through. His music doesn't feel phoned in like many radio pop songs. In fact, it's far from it. Wells has a substance that many just don't find in the genre that is his first love. A nine piece soul and funk explosion out of Sacramento that could be described as Jamiroqui meets J. Geils, Joy and Madness has been rocking stages all over California since inception, sharing the stage with the likes of Tower of Power, Collective Soul, The Monophonics, Trombone Shorty and more. They have added long-time Sacramento funkateer, Miss Nyxi on bass, and the prolific funk guitarist, Bobby G. The addition of world percussionist Ryan Sacco cemented the layer of groove that truly takes off in their live shows. Live performances show the band bringing its namesake to every set, leaving crowds sweaty and inspired with a raucous mix of raw stonesy energy, pulsing groove and juicy horn lines coloring tightly crafted songs that bring a modern classic pop sensibility to a new age of joyous funk and soul. Front man and vocalist Hans Eberbach brings so much freewheeling energy to the stage, he has literally broken right through the floorboards and his raw, open connection with the audience means every show is breaking down barriers and pulling everyone together into the excitement of the experience. Continuing a popular series of fun and interactive “Hands on History” activities offered each month, Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park and Friends of Sutter’s Fort will present a very special “Hands on History: Frontier Medicine, Sacramento's First Hospital” event. Fort visitors will be delighted to see the recently completed restoration of the historic exterior walls, gates and blacksmith shop plus have the opportunity to step back in time to the 1840's to learn more about intriguing frontier medicine. John Sutter used a medical book and a series of doctors to administer medical care. He also provided hospital facilities at the Fort for the citizens of his New Helvetia settlement and the thousands of Native Americans working on his land and living throughout the Valley. Then shortly after, the city’s first hospital, Sacramento Hospital, was established in an adobe structure near the Fort at the current location of Sutter General, which has since been renamed the Ose Adams Medical Pavilion. Fort guests will be treated to demonstrations provided by several physicians and a midwives showing the different aspects of 19th century medicine, including dentistry and homeopathic cures. As a special guest, Dr. Bob LaPerriere, curator at SSVMS Museum of Medical History, will deliver interesting presentations about Gold Rush-era medicine that will include intriguing artifacts on display such as an amputation kit circa 1870, bleeding and cupping implements, tooth extractors, ether mask, wooden splints, early medications and more. Fort docents will also lead demonstrations where visitors can get involved as “volunteer victims” to learn more about Gold Rush medicine practices. And, of course, demonstrations of black powder weaponry in action will take place, including the crowd-favorite firing of Sutter’s cannon.     [less-]

The Alarm is a prolific new wave band that began in the '80s and has upwards of 30 releases under its belt. The band originally started performing punk under the name the Toilets, but they quickly dropped the name and sound. The band is also proudly Welsh, releasing a number of their singles in both English and Welsh and being considered an important part of Welsh history. Now they tour the world time and time again much to the delight of longtime fans and music enthusiasts who have discovered the sound that the Alarm helped make popular. After several years of playing the electric guitar, he put down the instrument and picked up martial arts. When a serious injury left him in solitude, he picked up his old acoustic guitar and realized the similarities between the two arts. That inspired him to live his life exploring the endless possibilities of music and the guitar, and sharing the inspiration that music brings to us all. Producing his new album “Steppes” in Montreal, Canada with renowned guitarist and engineer Antoine Dufour, Adrian has been performing throughout the US and beyond with his modern percussive approach to acoustic fingerstyle guitar. For years Adrian has been a dedicated student of a unique yet ancient style of vocal expression from the far reaches of the Republic of Tuva, located in the center of the Asian continent bordering Mongolia.  In his album Steppes, Adrian introduces his Tuvan-style throat singing that mesmerizes audiences with its complicated and audibly striking sound. The fresh direction of his tonal odyssey is that of someone dedicated to their craft on every level. Also performing: Chad Wilkins [less-]

See How They Run is a brand new band, long in the imagining. Musical soul mates have a way of finding each other. Between teenage jam sessions in basements to mini-van tours across the country, from coffee shops to music festivals, the paths of Adrian Bourgeois and Paige Lewis seemed destined to cross again and again, always illuminating their shared devotion to creating music that meant something, that was built to last, that could stand against the test of time. The ephemeral nature of most of the music these days and the potential of what joined forces could amount to, grew to be an irresistible itch. That potential is now being tested and realized as both singer/songwriters have converged in Los Angeles. The music of See How They Run is like stepping into a kaleidoscope that tells a good story. Glockenspiels, sleigh bells, accordions, guitars, banjos, violins, and flutes intertwine with precision against a bed of lush Beach Boys/Fleetwood Mac harmonies. And the lyrics seem almost embarrassingly intimate and personal, until you realize you're singing along to them! For two artists who individually have been carving out a lifetime of music, playing thousands of gigs, and releasing six albums between them, it's strange to be at a sort of beginning again, but it's been a glorious beginning so far, playing to rapturous audiences across Los Angeles who also can't seem to get enough. Yes it's a new beginning, but isn't that what we all need, a chance to fall in love with music all over again? [less-]

Swingin' Utters may have a name reminiscent of the country, but this California five-piece is pure West Coast skate punk. Their guitars thrash like skaters making their way through a crowded sidewalk. The band is constantly turning their amps to eleven as they create as much chaos in a venue as they can. Swingin' Utters has been doing this for 30 years and have not shown a sign of slowing down, quieting down or calming down. Three decades in punk can take its toll on a body, but the folks in Swingin' Utters knew what they were getting into when they started the raucous band all those years ago.

After a number of stylistic and name changes, the band settled on the Alarm and a new wave sound that helped bolster the electronic sound that goes hand-in-hand with '80s alternative culture.
