Lungs received its world premiere in 2011 at the Studio Theatre in Washington D.C. and was met with acclaimed reviews. It would later have successful productions at the Crucible Studio in London, the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto, the New Repertory Theatre in Boston, the Melbourne Theatre Company in Australia and Sonorous Road Theatre in Raleigh, North Carolina. After the larger-scale production of The Christians in January 2017, the B3 Series is producing a more intimate play in Duncan Macmillan’s Lungs. Lungs asks important questions about today’s society and does so in a rather personal manner: when is the right time to have a child? With the uncertainty of global politics and everyday safety, is it wise to bring a new person into the world? Playwright Duncan Macmillan was facing 30, considering parenthood, and deeply concerned with the state of the environment when he wrote Lungs. Those issues find their way into Lungs and align with the B3 Series’ mission of exploring modern matters on stage. [less-]

Three of Sacramento’s funniest ladies are teaming up to write and perform their original piece, Treatment on B Street Theatre’s Mainstage. Stephanie, Amy and Tara are beloved members of B Street’s Acting Company and have performed in over 60 productions at the B Street Theatre alone. They have been featured on all three of the B Street stages as well as throughout Northern California with the B Street School Tour. Having worked as performers and writers throughout the region and nationally, these three are sure to make audiences laugh, cry, and laugh some more with this exciting World Premiere. Treatment is unlike any piece ever produced on B Street’s Mainstage. While audiences are accustomed to dramatized, autobiographical works by local artists such as Jack Gallagher, the ladies of Treatment are putting a unique spin on their upcoming production. Set on a girls camping trip, the three characters share laughs, fears, heartbreak and unexpected twists. While the personalities of characters Jayne, Roxanne and Patricia may resemble those of Tara, Stephanie and Amy, the three company members have worked to dramatize the story in order to create the theatrical version of an autobiographical novel. Since its beginnings in the late 1990s, Hot Club of Cowtown's star has continued to rise as its reputation for jaw-dropping virtuosity and unforgettable live shows has become the band's global brand. Lauded for its "down-home melodies and exuberant improvisation" (The Times, London), the Hot Club has always woven a combination of seemingly disparate styles together to its own magical effect, setting up camp "at that crossroads where country meets jazz and chases the blues away" (The Independent), and "conscious always that above all else, the music is for dancing and an old-fashioned good time" (The New York Times). The band's musical alchemy has been described as "another breathless journey in the Texas tardis" (The Times, London), while American Songwriter observed that "the excellent three players of this band could be doing anything but have chosen to honor the greats of jazz and swing with their sound." The Belfast Telegraph calls them "a pretty much perfect country trio at the very top of their game," while The New York Times, reviewing a live performance in New York City in 2011, describes the trio as armed with "an arsenal full of technique and joy." An international summer solstice musical celebration finds a festive new home base in Midtown -- be part of the party at the E. Claire Raley Studios for the Performing Arts (CLARA) as they mark Fête de la Musique (Make Music Day) with a street busking festival and concert. Fête de la Musique was born out of a humble burst of musical idealism in Paris, France, during the summer of 1982. In just two decades, it has become a wildly popular global event: this year, the summertime festival will draw music lovers in 540 cities -- including Sacramento -- worldwide. Sacramento-area buskers will perform free to the public at various locations on the grounds of CLARA. Many styles of music will be performed by musicians, bands, orchestras, choirs, soloists and deejays. Other CLARA tenants, including Sacramento Preparatory Music Academy and the Brazilian Center for Cultural Exchange, will also host open performances in their studios at CLARA during Fête de la Musique. The Blues Broads will also perform a ticketed concert in CLARA Auditorium in the evening. In this star-studded show, each artist gives the audience a taste of their individual specialty, and then combine voices in ways that make The Blues Broads far more than the sum of its parts. [less-]

The Skivvies are Lauren Molina and Nick Cearley, singer/actor/musicians performing stripped down arrangements of eclectic covers and eccentric originals. Not only is the music stripped down – cello, ukulele, glockenspiel, melodica – but The Skivvies literally strip down to their underwear to perform. The Skivvies were born in 2012, when they became YouTube sensations with their unique covers of artists like Robyn, Carole King and Rihanna. The videos led to live shows, and now this “musically thrilling”, undie-rock, comedy-pop duo continues to perform to sold-out audiences in New York and beyond. [less-]

An international summer solstice musical celebration finds a festive new home base in Midtown -- be part of the party at the E.

[less-]
