Reaching Through

By Jessica Levine

Description: Reaching Through consists of five tube-like structures that flow up towards the sky in forms resembling coral or plants, made kinetic by the use of salvaged truck suspension springs. The springs are placed about halfway up each of the tubular structures, allowing the top pieces of the sculpture to sway and move in the wind or when touched by people. This piece is about the organized internal functionality of living organisms, in contrast with the disorganization and sometimes seemingly chaotic physical world considered to be reality. Reaching Through is composed of hand formed steel that has been galvanized. It was built for Burning Man 2017 as an honorarium project.

About the Artist: Jessica Levine is a sculptor and metal fabricator, who uses steel to “draw” in physical space, hand forming and welding each piece of metal to match the images within her mind. She attended UC Santa Cruz, where she found her love of welding, leading her down a path of building big sculptures and becoming a licensed welding contractor and business owner. Jessica has built four large scale sculptures for the Burning Man Arts festival, and her works have been exhibited nationally and internationally at events such as EDC Orlando and the Toronto Light Festival. She is the owner of Bear Metal Welding in South Lake Tahoe, CA LIC #1077544.

Reaching Through is located on the exterior landing of the MARRS building (1050 20th Street) and is sponsored by Heller Pacific and Fulcrum Properties.
