Mechateuthis

by Barry Crawford

Description: Mechateuthis is a life-size sculpture of a giant squid, built as an Honorarium piece for Burning Man 2015. It has 8 motorized mechanical movements that animate the squid’s arms, tentacles, mantle fins, eyes, and beak.

About the Artist: Barry Crawford is a kinetic sculpture artist based in Silver Springs, Nevada. He uses a combination of found metal objects and hand fabricated steel parts to produce his mechanically styled creations. Crawford has always been fascinated by how things work both in the natural world and in man-made devices. His work plays with the differences and similarities between the two and invites the viewer to appreciate the intricate workings of the world around us.

Mechateuthis is located at Mulvaney’s B&L (1215 19th Street) and is sponsored by the Handle District.
