Omero Rangel, Midtown Second Saturday’s September featured artist, brings a vibrant mix of color, culture, and cosmic inspiration to Sacramento’s creative scene. Self-taught and deeply rooted in his Mexican heritage, Omero channels his fascination with outer space, bold contrasts, and uplifting energy into pieces that reflect both personal expression and universal connection.
For nearly a decade, Midtown has been both home and muse for Omero. Surrounded by art in everyday life, from neighborhood walks to local galleries, he continues to evolve his style, growing from early pencil sketches to large-scale acrylic paintings that embody joy, spirit, and cultural pride. His introduction to Second Saturday came through Chalk It Up where his colorful sugar skull design lit up the art walk, marking the start of a deeper connection with the Midtown arts community.
In our recent interview, Omero shared his journey as a lifelong creator, his aspirations of pursuing art full-time, and his vision of spreading positivity and unity through his work. Read on to discover how he transforms color into connection and culture into conversation, and be sure to follow him on Instagram @omero_art to see more of his latest creations and see him creating live chalk art at TopStitch Productions (1717 19th Street) from 1–7 p.m. during Midtown Second Saturday on September 13.
I was always drawing as early as I can remember, it didn’t take much more than a pencil and a piece of paper to keep me occupied. Initially, I predominately used just a regular old number 2 pencil. I was just either creating things out of my imagination or recreating things that I saw in real life or magazines, and that is how I got a lot of practice at a young age. It was a way for me to go into my own world for a little bit and completely tune out the rest of the world. I have to give a tremendous thanks to my mom because although money was tight growing up she would always try her best to get me art supplies because she knew it meant a lot to me. Bob Ross was not only a mentor but a complete inspiration, I was always so amazed at the ease and flow of all his paintings, and although I did not paint much as a child, I could sit down in complete focus when “The Joy of Painting” came on. I have never had any formal education other than a basic art class in high school, but art is a part of my daily life and my art has definitely evolved over time, starting with basic pencil sketches and currently looking to create acrylic pieces on bigger and bigger canvases.

I would describe my artistic style as colorful, cultural and cosmic. I enjoy using bright colors and bold contrasts to evoke my emotions, I also have a desire for viewers to be slightly uplifted or simply in a slightly better mood after observing my work. Many of my paintings are influenced by my Mexican upbringing and the beauty that I see in the Mexican people and nature. I have always been extremely fascinated by outer space as well as inner space and think the cosmic aspect is a theme that runs concurrent with our lives and most of the mystery of the universe is in the things we can’t see, like energy, forces and waves. I think that all artists and creatives bring a uniquely individual perspective to everyday things that are in front of us on a daily basis, but an artist will perceive these unassuming scenes in a completely different light. What I believe sets me apart from other artists is the fact that not one person on this earth can see anything the way that I see it, we all live different lives, and we all see things differently.

I first became involved with Second Saturday when a coordinator of Chalk-It-Up Sac put me in connection with Explore Midtown because they were looking for chalk artists to decorate some squares along an art walk path. I chose to create a Mexican sugar skull because it was full of color and represented Dia De Los Muertos. What it means to me as a local artist is the opportunity to meet people in the community as well as other artists. It encourages me to be more active in my community and talk to more local artist, and from my experience the art scene is warm and welcoming.
I have lived in Midtown for about 10 years.
The impact that living in Midtown has had on my creative process and artistic style is that I love the fact that I am surrounded by art the moment I step out of my home, whether it’s a walk around the park or grabbing a coffee at a local coffee shop. Art is infused in every aspect of Midtown. I am constantly amazed and inspired by other artists in the area, which we have plenty of access to in Midtown with all the great little galleries we have.

A huge aspiration of mine and probably ranks as one of the biggest goals of my lifetime is to eventually put myself in a position to create art full-time. I am currently self-employed, but within the fitness industry, and looking to shift my focus within the next 10 years. This is something that I have envisioned for a long time, and the vision continues to become clearer and clearer as time goes on. This will not only allow me the freedom to create as much as I want, whereas time will no longer be a factor, but the opportunity for impact within my community will be much improved as well. The message I look to spread is an absolutely positive one. I feel that we are interconnected in ways that we are not always aware of, and I hope through my art we can find things in common that bring us peace, freedom, and joy.
I really enjoy participating in events like Second Saturday because it allows me to connect with my audience and the people in my community in person. With the advancements in technology and overindulgence in social media, zoom meetings and other automated conveniences, sometimes takes us away from the important face to face interactions that community events bring to us and I personally would much rather talk in-person.
