Street FC Soccer Court Installment Case Study

October 7th, 2024

Objective

In 2024, Midtown Parks, in collaboration with SKK Developments and Street FC, set out to elevate community engagement and recreational opportunities by transforming a vacant lot at 1116 18th Street into “The Court at 18L,” a vibrant street soccer court. This initiative addresses the need for accessible recreational spaces while fostering community connections among residents of all ages and skill levels. By creating this dynamic environment, Midtown Parks reaffirms its commitment to cultivating an inviting atmosphere that promotes healthy interaction and camaraderie through the joy of sport. This initiative also breathes new life into what was once an empty lot, turning it into a lively community amenity.

Our Strategy

From February to September 2024, Midtown Parks partnered with the City of Sacramento, SKK Developments, and Street FC to bring this significant addition to the area’s recreational landscape—Midtown’s first hard-top soccer court. The innovative model introduced by Street FC allows for organized pickup games through a mobile app, connecting players of varying skill levels and fostering community spirit. The newly developed 6,000 square foot lot will also host special events aimed at promoting health and social interaction.

To celebrate the court’s opening, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on September 12, featuring a ceremonial first goal kicked by Sotiris Kolokotronis, President of SKK Developments. The festivities continued on September 14 during Midtown’s Second Saturday, with the court hosting its first official co-ed adult pickup games, a DJ, and food trucks, making it a vibrant stop on the Second Saturday Art Walk. Attendees were treated to live games, learned more about Street FC, and enjoyed the new mural above the court by artist Cheyenne Randall. The promotion of this public space was bolstered by media coverage and social media posts to encourage community participation.
