Left quad. Right quad. Lunge. A girl’s indoor soccer team warms up. From the safety of their suburban stretch circle, the team navigates big questions and wages tiny battles with all the vim and vigor of a pack of adolescent warriors. A portrait of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for nine American girls who just want to score some goals.

Written by Sarah DeLappe and Directed by Nancy Carlin.

“The scary, exhilarating brightness of raw adolescence emanates from every scene of this uncannily assured first play by Sarah DeLappe.”
The New York Times

There is nothing Farrell Scott loves more than capturing what happens behind the scenes to bring food to our tables. Whether it's documenting a busy kitchen or a working farm, she is only too happy to be in the middle of it all and seize the action.

For the past several years, Scott has been working with a restaurant group designing their establishments from top to bottom. What she’s witnessed, time and time again, is the passion and full dedication of the people that bring beautiful, local food to the dining table. The story of their food is told repeatedly - just look at the millions of food images posted daily. But what’s their story? The Executive Chef that is an avid bow hunter, the Chef de Cuisine who has a wicked golf game or the Sous Chef that grows food and edible flowers. Scott wanted to find out about who was creating the amazing meals she was experiencing. Thus came about her first deep dive into portrait photography to bring you - Chefs Off Line.

Scott, a native of Sacramento, is a commercial photographer specializing in the art of food, agriculture, and architecture.

The Gladding, McBean & Co. factory, in the Placer County town of Lincoln, has operated continuously since 1875. Starting as a clay pipe manufacturer, “the pottery” soon expanded its product line and by the end of the 19th century was producing the architectural terra cotta that continues to ornament buildings in major cities across the U.S. and beyond. From 1987 to 2011, Gladding, McBean was the site of Feats of Clay, an annual ceramics exhibition that introduced thousands of visitors to the factory. Between 1996 and 2011, in workshops organized by Gene Kennedy, nearly 300 photographers explored, documented, and interpreted Gladding, McBean, a working factory as well as an icon of California’s industrial heritage. This juried exhibit celebrates that extraordinary opportunity and the photographic legacy it has given us.

[more+]

Sacramento Ballet opens its season at The Sofia with Telling Stories, a four-work production building on the company’s artistic roots and high-flying future.Telling Stories is the first of a series of innovative and artistically exciting programs envisioned by new Artistic Director Amy Seiwert.

Telling Stories explores tales of fantasy, betrayal, and heartbreak as part of a full season of dance the Ballet is calling “Roots and Wings.”

First on the bill is a historic piece: Incident at Blackbriar, one of the early works Cunningham staged at Sacramento Ballet. Based on a love triangle in D.H. Lawrence’s novella The Fox, this masterfully crafted story features an original score by author and composer William Sleator.

Cigarettes, a dance-theater work by Hougland, was inspired by multiple interpretations of Patsy Cline’s song "Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray." When it premiered in 2011, it was likened to the movie plot of Groundhog Day – how we can’t move forward until we get things right.

Instructions, created by Seiwert in 2016 and based on Neil Gaiman’s poem of the same name, is an imaginative guidebook on how to survive any trip to the underworld, science-fiction novel, or fairy tale. Playing with music is an ongoing theme in Seiwert’s works, and Instructions is interwoven with Benjamin Britten’s "Cello Suite No 1, Op. 72." Accompanying Instructions will be Evan Kahn, principal cellist for Symphony Silicon Valley.

Saunders’ world premiere will highlight her fresh and fearlessly creative style, performed to the music of English singer-songwriter Nick Drake.

Note: This event is for Ages 5+.

Saint Ashbury formed in early 2013 as a songwriting project and quickly evolved into a band. Singer Jaime McCrary's haunting voice walks a thin line between alt country and contemporary rock. Some have referred to them as KFOG music, and anyone who has lived in San Francisco knows exactly what I am talking about. Jeremy Cozakas and Ashley Mitchell bring two different songwriting styles to the band that compliment each other nicely and paired with Jaime's unique voice, create a sound that is definitely melodic, yet difficult to label.

How to honor the legacy of a band deemed sacred? To tread on holy ground is perilous, and must be done with the intent and spirit of a disciple — Pay attention to the intricacies of the magic, explore the far ends of the innovation, strive for ever-growing ability, and let the purity of the love for the music drive it all.

Drummer Clementine is the founding member of Zepparella. From the beginning of her musical career, her goal has been to be onstage every night. The pursuit of that goal has led Clementine to constantly tour the US and Europe in projects as diverse as Bottom, AC/DShe, The House Of More, The Solid, Francis Bakin, and Stars Turn Me On. She tackles the best rock drumming ever written with her own emotionally powerful style, bringing the Motown influence of the Bonham groove to the forefront. The profound musical connection established with Gretchen Menn (guitar), Angeline Saris (bass), and Noelle Doughty (vocals) creates the bond required to do this great music justice.

In the summer of 2005, after a series of deaths in the family, Michael Deni left his hometown in New Jersey for San Francisco. He spent the next several months with his guitar and a synthesizer, turning that tragedy into the songs that would soon become the foundation for Geographer. With the additions of cellist Nathan Blaz and drummer Brian Ostreicher, Geographer spent the next year cutting their teeth in the Bay Area, winning over crowds with the heart-pounding epics that make up their debut record, Innocent Ghosts. After being selected one of three "Undiscovered Bands You Need To Hear Now" by SPIN Magazine and garnering considerable word-of-mouth praise from their energetic live shows, the band signed to San Francisco-based label Tricycle Records. Animal Shapes follows up Kites, building on the synth-driven aesthetic of the single, while flirting with darker, more esoteric underpinnings.

The record merges Geographer's aptitude for crafting beautiful, haunting melodies with textural sounds and polyrhythmic energy, marking an evolution of their distinct style. With the overwhelming response to the release of Kites and Animal Shapes, punctuated by a dynamic and engaging live set, the band has already begun to make an indelible mark on the ears of music fans worldwide.

Dry Branch Fire Squad is an American old-time bluegrass band founded by Ron Thomason in 1976 in southwest of Virginia.

MerryGold began as the songwriting duo of Jillian Secor (guitar, vocals) and Alex Stephens (guitar, mandolin, vocals). MerryGold’s 6-piece lineup currently includes fiddle, bass, banjo, and accordion. Based in the small northern California town of Placerville, themes of the Gold Country are abundant in their music. Their whiskey-soaked folk/bluegrass songs take listeners back to simpler times and portray a rawness that embodies the pioneer spirit of the Wild West. While traditional folk and bluegrass elements are apparent in their music, MerryGold incorporates a wide variety of influences to create their own sound.
